It's time for your own personal journey!

You are invited into a sacred space where you can collect your thoughts, and explore your heart. Greet the sketchbook pages with sincerity and allow them to capture your unique light and reflect the essence of your soul. It's more than a collection of images, found objects and words, it's a personal artifact. A sketchbook journal is a traveler's salve, soothing the commotion of our relentless thoughts by providing a safe container for them. A mindful, sacred space to call your own when travelling, a journal keeps us company. A personal traveling shrine or altar where you commune with only you. Keeping a journal while navigating the discoveries and obstacles that come with travel is a rare and extraordinary opportunity for growth.

                            Stephanie Danforth Fine Artist/Art Instructor

Hi there! I'm Stephanie, the first chapter of my life was that of a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for twenty years. I loved it while it lasted, but art was calling and it was time for a new chapter!

I have been a full time self taught artist for the last 25 years, you can look at my art at stephaniedanforth.com. My main medium is oil paint, but I love anything creative, including etched metal, making sculptural angels from found objects, and my first love, watercolors. I believe that being an artist is reflective in the way we live our life. One of my most powerful palettes is that of travel.

A little more about me....

While attending a month-long artist residency in France in April of 2023, I realized how much being around other creatives filled me in a way I had never felt before. I wanted to teach others how to paint and create. Providing through instruction the gift of art!

I love helping a person to reengage with their creative self, which might have been tucked away for years or just needs a little push! I love the curiosity, wonder and potential it opens when a person experiences their own creativity. It is a true honoring to create a vessel for exploration and wonder for like minded women. The gathering of women is so powerful, you add art into that mix and I do believe you have magic! Please come along on this fantastic journey!

                                Michelle Guitard Fine Artist/Art Instructor

I'm Michelle, fine art painter, teacher, mentor and retreat facilitator. Living and working in St. George ON Canada. I have been an art instructor and mentor for 10 years. My passion is to share all of my creative tools and insights, while empowering my students to often rediscover their inner artist by connecting with another culture, with art, with each other and most importantly with ourselves.

A little more about me.....

30 years ago I completed a Graphic Design degree and furthered my fine art studies at York University and the University of Guelph. My primary focus was painting landscapes, female figures and birds in acrylic on canvas. I earned representation at galleries in Ontario and Alberta. In 2016 I began teaching workshops in my studio and at the Dundas Valley School of Art. My art began to evolve and my creative voice got louder. Running local art workshops and creating communities has influenced my work in a very profound way. It is through creative communities that I have had the privilege to witness the power and beauty of making art together. Much of my teaching and mentorship involves helping artists of all levels and practices to find their creative voice and establish a more consistent creative practice in their lives.

Tucked away in the pristine wilderness of southwestern Nova Scotia, Trout Point Lodge offers a rare opportunity to retreat into nature without sacrificing comfort or beauty. Surrounded by forest, rivers and untouched wilderness, this secluded lodge feels wonderfully removed from the pace of everyday life.

Here, days unfold more slowly—among towering trees, quiet waters, beautiful food and the rhythms of the natural world. It is an extraordinary setting for creativity, reflection and connection, where we can gather, make art, explore the landscape and simply breathe a little deeper. Trout Point captures everything we love about a Wayfinders retreat: beauty, adventure, nourishment and the space to reconnect with ourselves and one another.

ACCOMODATIONS

LUXERY WILDERNESS LODGE

Hidden within the pristine Acadian forest of southwestern Nova Scotia, Trout Point Lodge is an intimate five-star wilderness retreat nestled in the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve, alongside the remarkable Tobeatic Wilderness Area. Surrounded by the Tusket and Napier Rivers, ancient forests, lakes and wetlands, it is a place that feels beautifully removed from the outside world.

Handcrafted from massive Eastern Spruce logs, stone and natural materials, the lodge blends rustic Canadian architecture with understated luxury. Spacious, individually designed guest rooms feature handcrafted Acadian furnishings, original artwork, beautiful Frette linens, private ensuite bathrooms and peaceful views of the surrounding river and forest. Many rooms also feature stone fireplaces and private porches or patios.

The culinary experience is an important part of life at Trout Point. Daily-changing Chef’s menus celebrate the flavours of Nova Scotia, bringing together regional seafood, organic ingredients, wild woodland delicacies and produce grown in the lodge gardens. Everything is prepared from scratch, creating a dining experience rooted in season, place and sustainability.

Beyond the lodge, the wilderness becomes part of the experience. Kayaking and canoeing, forest bathing, hiking, yoga and guided stargazing offer beautiful ways to explore and reconnect with nature. At the end of the day, unwind in the wood-fired hot tub on the banks of the Tusket River or warm up in the riverside cedar barrel sauna beneath some of North America’s darkest night skies.

This is luxury in the wilderness—private, peaceful and beautifully cared for, with extraordinary food, thoughtful comforts and nature at your doorstep. A remarkable setting to create, explore, gather and simply slow down.

ITINERARY

TROUT POINT LODGE, NOVA SCOTIA

October 25 – November 1, 2027

DAY 1 — ARRIVAL & WELCOME

Arrive at beautiful Trout Point Lodge and settle into your private accommodations. Take time to explore our wilderness surroundings before gathering for welcome cocktails and introductions, followed by a special welcome dinner prepared by Trout Point’s culinary team. We’ll end our first evening fireside as we introduce the creative journey ahead.

DAY 2 — INTO THE WILDERNESS

Begin the day with breakfast at the lodge followed by an introduction to our Travel Sketchbook & Art Journal. We’ll explore watercolour, mixed media and creative mark-making inspired by the colours and textures of Nova Scotia.

Following lunch, we’ll step into the surrounding Acadian forest for a guided nature experience before returning to the lodge to make art.

Late afternoon, we’ll introduce Travelling Mercies—our hand-sewn creative project weaving together textiles, personal reflection and creative writing. This evolving project will continue to unfold throughout our week together. We’ll finish the day gathered around the table for dinner at the lodge.

DAY 3 — CREATE, EXPLORE & GATHER

After breakfast, we’ll gather for a morning of art-making and creative exploration. Following lunch, the afternoon offers time to experience the wilderness surrounding Trout Point—perhaps kayaking or canoeing, walking the forest trails, or simply finding a quiet place beside the river to sketch, write and reflect.

We’ll return to the lodge with time to continue our journals and Travelling Mercies before gathering for dinner.

DAY 4 — ART, NATURE & CONNECTION

Following breakfast, we’ll spend the morning making art together, drawing inspiration from the landscape, textures and colours surrounding us.

After lunch, we’ll continue exploring the natural beauty of Trout Point, with time for a guided wilderness experience or a slower afternoon enjoying the lodge. Return to your journal, add to your Travelling Mercies, unwind in the riverside sauna or wood-fired hot tub, or simply curl up by the fire. We’ll gather again for dinner.

DAY 5 — WILD NOVA SCOTIA

After breakfast, we’ll venture deeper into the extraordinary landscape surrounding Trout Point. Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy a guided hike or nature experience with opportunities for photography, sketching and gathering inspiration along the way.

Following lunch, we’ll return to the lodge to make art and translate some of what we’ve discovered outdoors onto the pages of our journals. The evening brings another beautiful dinner together.

DAY 6 — ART, WATER & STILLNESS

Begin with breakfast followed by a morning creative session using watercolour, mixed media and our journals. After lunch, the afternoon is intentionally spacious—take to the water, wander through the forest, enjoy the lodge amenities, book a massage, work on your Travelling Mercies, curl up by the fire or simply enjoy the stillness of this remarkable place.

After dinner, we’ll have an opportunity to experience Trout Point’s extraordinary night skies.

DAY 7 — BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER

Following breakfast, our final full day is dedicated to creating, completing our Travel Sketchbooks & Art Journals and adding the finishing touches to our Travelling Mercies.

After lunch, enjoy some final quiet time in the wilderness, revisit a favourite place, or simply settle into the beauty of the lodge. That evening, we’ll come together for our special closing dinner, celebrating our creativity, friendships and the experience we’ve shared.

DAY 8 — DEPARTURE

We’ll enjoy one final breakfast together followed by our closing gathering. We leave Trout Point carrying our journals and handmade creations, new friendships and memories of a week spent creating, exploring and reconnecting in the wild beauty of Nova Scotia.

ART SUPPLIES & CREATIVE SUGGESTIONS

One of the joys of travel journaling is that you really don’t need a lot of supplies to create something meaningful and beautiful.

We want our creative workshops to feel accessible, playful and inspiring, whether you have been making art for years or are opening a sketchbook for the very first time.

Please don’t feel that you need to spend a lot of money on art supplies. Simple, inexpensive supplies work beautifully for what we will be creating together.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

Each participant will receive:

  • A handmade travel sketchbook

  • A black micro pen

  • A gold pen

  • A collection of curated collage sheets

  • All sewing and creative materials required for our Travelling Mercies talisman project

Michelle and Stephanie will also bring a collection of additional creative supplies for everyone to share, including glue sticks, scissors, decorative stamps and ink pads, Posca-style paint pens, mini printers and other fun creative tools.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

There are only two things we ask you to bring for your creative workshops:

Watercolour Kit

Please bring a small, portable watercolour set with a good basic selection of colours.

There is absolutely no need to purchase an expensive or professional-quality set. An inexpensive beginner or student watercolour kit is perfectly suitable for our workshops.

If you already own watercolours that you enjoy using, simply bring those!

Watercolour Brushes

Please also bring a small selection of watercolour brushes.

We recommend approximately three brushes in a few different sizes and/or shapes. A combination of round and flat brushes is useful, but again, they do not need to be expensive or professional quality.

If your watercolour kit comes with a brush, you can certainly use it, but having a couple of additional brushes will give you more flexibility.

Where Can I Find Them?

Watercolour sets and brushes are easy to find. You can look at:

  • Amazon

  • Your local art supply store

  • Your local arts and crafts store

Choose something within your budget. There is no need to spend a lot of money. We are much more interested in exploring, experimenting and enjoying the creative process than in the brand name on your supplies.

OPTIONAL CREATIVE SUPPLIES

Everything below is completely optional.

You do not need to purchase these items for your retreat. We are simply sharing some of the tools we enjoy using for travel journaling.

If you already own any of them and would like to bring them along, please do!

Mechanical Pencil + Eraser

Useful for light sketching and planning your pages before adding watercolour, pen or collage.

Paint Pens

Paint pens are fun for adding colour, lettering, marks and details over watercolour and collage.

Michelle and Stephanie will have a selection available to share, so there is no need to purchase your own.

Stamps + Ink Pads

Alphabet, number and decorative stamps are a fun way to add words, dates and graphic elements to journal pages.

We will bring a selection of stamps and ink pads for everyone to share.

Mini Bluetooth Printer

These small portable printers connect to your phone and allow you to print little black-and-white photographs and images to incorporate into your journal.

Michelle and Stephanie will bring mini printers for the group to share, so you do not need to purchase one.

Additional Collage Materials

We provide curated collage sheets, but you are welcome to bring additional materials that feel personal or inspiring to you.

Small photographs, maps, tickets, interesting papers, handwritten notes, old book pages or other lightweight treasures can all become wonderful additions to a travel journal.

Your Favourite Art Supplies

If you already have coloured pencils, markers, favourite pens, brushes, collage materials or other small creative tools you love working with, you are very welcome to bring them.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

Please remember that you do not need to arrive with a suitcase full of art supplies.

The only art supplies we ask you to bring are:

A small watercolour kit + a few watercolour brushes.

Your handmade travel sketchbook, black micro pen, gold pen, curated collage sheets and all materials for our Travelling Mercies talisman project will be provided.

We will also have lots of additional creative tools available to share.

Keep it simple, choose supplies within your budget, and come ready to explore, experiment and create!
